Know The Facts
· Sadly, over 10,000 children are injured in unsafe cribs every year seriously enough to require hospital treatment.
· In the past decade, 540 children died from crib injuries, a rate of 54 children each year.
· The majority (80 percent) of children who died from airway obstruction injuries in 1997 were children ages 4 and under.
· Among children under age 1, suffocation is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death, followed by motor vehicle occupant injury, choking, drowning and fire and burns.
· It is estimated that as many as 90 percent of unintentional injuries can be prevented.
